artwork by Agnes Pelton
by Gilbert Vicario
"An inner realm, rather than an outer landscape." —Agnes Pelton
Agnes Pelton (1881-1961) wrote of her highly abstract, highly symbolic compositions that her paintings were "like little windows" which provide a view of what is inside.
The subjects of her spiritually inspired pictures are rooted in the desert of California. The artist had been born in Stuttgart but settled in the California desert in 1932 and lived there until her death.
After being forgotten for many years, public attention is increasingly being focused on Pelton's art, illustrating her important artistic contributions to American Modernism.
Gilbert Vicario is the chief curator at the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
