Born in Tehran, Iran, Maryam Sayyad PhD immigrated to Los Angeles with her family when still a child. In college, she studied philosophy and art, two fields that have continued to guide her activity through life. Drawn to ancient cultures and committed to an embodied pursuit of knowledge, she moved to Athens, Greece to complete her BA in Philosophy at the American College of Greece. Afterwards, she continued to study art and design at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles before opening and operating an interior design firm for several years while independently studying philosophy, mythology, literature, religion, and ancient cultures. She received an MA in Mythological Studies from Pacifica Graduate Institute, followed by a PhD with a dissertation titled, Death, a Love Story: A Comparative Study of Mythic Encounters between Love and Death.
Maryam lectures and teaches courses on mythology and its interactions with philosophy, psychology, and culture. She also consults on myth-based film and animation projects. Currently, she serves as director of art and education at the psychologically focused non-profit Cross-Cultural Expressions, event director for Namah Ensemble dance and theater group, and is now grateful to serve as contributing scholar for the monumental Philosophical Research Society where she hosted the first Mythos of Iran Conference in May 2023.
