A "fantasy of the afterlife set mainly in Heaven ... A couple of chapters towards the end carry the protagonist's spirit accompanied by angels, to the physical planet Jupiter and contain a description of the advanced civilization there." - Locke, Voyages in Space 107. "One of the few spiritualist utopias." - Roemer, The Obsolete Necessity, p. 187. In addition to the two photographs of Carlyle Petersilea (1844-1903), a noted concert pianist and music teacher, this new edition adds fifteen pages of reviews of this novel and OCEANIDES: A PSYCHICAL NOVEL (1890), the second of his four occult/utopian novels.
Petersilea was born in Boston and spent most of his life there. In 1892 he moved to California where he and his wife built a home at Tropico, near Los Angeles. It was there that he died of a stroke in June of 1903.
