Enid Lillian Brandt was born in San Francisco on December 21st, 1891 to two successful musicians, her mother Leonie, and father Noah. The Brandts nurtured their daughter's immediately apparent musical gifts and were Enid's teachers throughout her short life. Enid began imitating melodies and rhythms at age one, and she soon began inventing her own tunes at the piano. Able to instantaneously match any note thrown her way, it was quickly evident that she had the gift of perfect pitch. At the age of three, Enid showed signs of an even more curious gift. One day she was studying piano with her mother, when she suddenly played the music in a different key signature than the score indicated. When Mrs. Brandt asked her why she changed key, Enid replied "Oh, because this key is a much prettier red!" Such colorful comparisons would become an enduring presence in Enid's life...
