About the Course:
'Digital Spirituality' is a seven-module course designed to invite wisdom seekers to explore themselves and their spiritual lives through digital culture and technology.
The digital world influences every aspect of our lives, including our religious and spiritual lives. Religion and spirituality have steadily migrated into cyberspace. Digital spirituality is a quarter century-old movement within religion and spirituality, whose current form includes online churches, live-sermon streaming, digital tithing, online Bible and other sacred text discussion groups, virtual meditation and prayer groups, virtual tours of sacred landmarks, online religious education and musical events, and, to a more limited degree, digital marriages, baptisms, and funerals. The next generation of digital spirituality will make active use of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies, which in some cases may pose serious challenges to religious and spiritual beliefs and practices and the very idea of what it means to be human. The course explores these challenges.
The course is based to a significant degree on instructor Don Iannone’s new scholarly book, Digital Spirituality, which examines the role of digital culture and technology in shaping religion and spirituality. The central contribution of Don’s book is an expanded view of the “digital spiritual afterlife,” which is presented in model form.
During the course, wisdom seekers will explore the opportunities and problems posed by digital spirituality, and they will be given the opportunity to explore their own spirituality in a personal way within a digital environment. The ideas of important pioneer researchers in digital religion and spirituality will be presented and discussed. The course offers an objective, open, and free inquiry into advancing personal wisdom, and offers a digital path to perennial wisdom; one that is relevant to any religion or spiritual tradition. In this sense, the course is highly inclusive.
Included in the course registration fee is the reduced cost of a digital copy of Digital Spirituality, instructor Don Iannone's book. All students who pay the registration fee will receive a digital copy of the book. All other course materials are provided free of charge.
