The Philosophical Research Society is pleased to announce the hiring of our new Executive Director, Dennis Bartok. Dennis has over thirty years of experience in the administration of nonprofit cultural organizations, as detailed in his following message. With Dennis, we look forward to an expansion of programs, cultural outreach, and communication with our constituents, both locally and worldwide.

Throughout its eighty-eight years, PRS has sought to embody the vision of its founder, Manly P. Hall, providing a wealth of information and support for those who seek wisdom from the many diverse streams of religious and philosophical thought which have sprung forth in response to the fundamental need for meaning which is essential to human survival. However, to embody this ideal, it is necessary to build and maintain a firm foundation in the mundane world.

Plato’s Theaetetus relates a tale of Thales, one of the greatest of the pre-Socratic philosophers, who, while walking along studying the heavens, did not give due regard to his path and fell into a pit. We too, while facilitating contact with the sublime, need to also be mindful of our path and meet the necessities which allow us to continue.

Dear PRS Community,

I’m tremendously excited to be joining the Philosophical Research Society, an organization I’ve admired and enjoyed since I first wandered into the marvelous PRS bookshop in the early 1990s when I moved to Los Angeles. For over 30 years I’ve been involved in the nonprofit cultural arts field in L.A. – first as head of programming for the American Cinematheque and then later on the management side – as well as working as a filmmaker, author, distributor and preservationist. I’m hoping my experience engaging with the general public, artists and scholars, longtime supporters and volunteers will help PRS expand its programs, exhibits and outreach. Over the years I conducted thousands of interviews with guest artists and filmmakers at the historic Egyptian Theatre, and I think PRS can continue serving as a similar meeting place – fascinating and mysterious, warm and welcoming – for scholars, artists and the general public interested in mythology, the humanities, and alternative paths to wisdom. I’m also very much looking forward to engaging with the Los Feliz community and finding ways to collaborate with local organizations to make PRS even more accessible and integral to its neighborhood – as well as engaging with a broader community online through increased web seminars, live Q&As, podcasts and more.

Sincerely,
Dennis Bartok, Executive Director
