Dionysus and the Balance of Life

By Mark Storer

Bacchus, or Dionysus, was known as the god of wine. That was not, however, his only job. Bacchus was also god of agriculture, fertility, drama, and revelry. Why those things should have been linked together becomes clearer when the drunken orgy fests known as “Bacchanalia” became de rigueur and, eventually, banned by the Roman senate and the king of Thebes.
He was known by another name as well. “Liber” was the name the Romans gave him, and it gave birth to words like “libertine” and “libation.” But these points of origin fail to tell the story of one of the twelve Olympian gods who made life what it is today. Bacchus was unique and also decidedly human in his pursuits, and he is now only widely remembered as a party-god who let loose a little bit and permitted others to do the same. It is in that spirit, though, that we should perhaps best remember him. For Bacchus, or Dionysus, or Liber, the act of celebration and partying was serious business.

Nothing comes from nothing. Manly Hall’s vision for the All-Seeing Eye was entirely supported by contributions from its readers who paid for their subscription with gifts made according to their means. Manly Hall wrote,

“This magazine is published and distributed privately to those who make possible with their financial support its publication. The magazine cannot be bought and has no fixed value. Like all of the ancient teachings which it seeks to promulgate, it has no comparative value, but the students must support it for its own intrinsic merit.”

Your donation pays for a full year of New PRS Journal excellence, including exclusive access to a subscriber content—rare unpublished articles, and new writing by experts in their fields, poetry, and book reviews. Initiation is a beginning, and an end – the initiate enters a new life as a member of a select group, but ends their old life. Nothing can be the same again. We ask you to join the PRS mission to reveal the light of ancient wisdom.

The New Journal also needs your writing. We are presently interested in articles about these topics: Veil – Halloween – Water – Winter – India – Saturn – Spring – Tarot.
